You must use your PIN with your Debit or Credit Card when asked to do so by retailers in the UK, or you will not be able to pay for goods and services.

If you have forgotten your PIN
If you can’t remember your PIN, or you’ve lost your PIN, you can request a PIN reminder by calling +44 (0) 1534 616000.

Changing your PIN
If you want to change your PIN, you can use most cash machines in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man - all HSBC Bank machines offer this facility. Just insert your card and enter your PIN, select the PIN services option, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Unlocking your PIN

If you have incorrectly tried three consecutive times to key in your PIN – even on three separate occasions – your PIN will be locked. This is to prevent fraudulent use.

To unlock your PIN, you can use most cash machines in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle Man - all HSBC Bank machines offer this facility. Just insert your card and enter your PIN, select the PIN services option, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Your PIN will automatically unlock and can be used with your card in retailers.

Useful ways to remember your PIN

The key to choosing a PIN is familiarity – it’s much easier to remember a number with unique associations than a random series of digits.

Choose a number that means something to you personally and you can’t go wrong:

• Your four-digit PIN could be based on a date: the date you got married or a historical date that strikes a chord.
• You might choose something quirky: the time the postman turns up or when you set your alarm, e.g., 06:35
• How about selecting a section of a phone number you already know?
• If you’re better with words, use the number of letters required to spell a memorable phrase, e.g., I love my PIN = 1,4,2,3.
• You could select two initials and work out the alphabetical number of the letters. e.g., John Livingson would be J and L, that's 10 and 12, a new PIN!
